What is lymphatic treatment? Rune Åbø explains

By Updated 5 September 2026

I look beyond the one spot that hurts. Muscles, connective tissue and how you move are part of the picture. That is the starting point for my lymphatic treatment approach. It is an alternative treatment model, not the same as clinical manual lymphatic drainage. Here is the distinction.

What is lymphatic treatment?
My approach: alternative treatment, not a diagnosis

I use lymphatic treatment as an alternative working model involving muscle, connective tissue and a before/after observation. Words such as pump and passage describe my approach. A symptom change does not prove that lymph flow caused the pain. Clinical manual lymphatic drainage for lymphedema is a different care pathway.

Read the evidence and the distinction. The independent sources on this page support general health information, not proof of my method.

Short answer

Manual lymphatic drainage is a specialised, gentle massage technique intended to encourage movement of lymph fluid. Its established clinical role is mainly within lymphedema management when delivered as part of an appropriate care plan. Claims that it “detoxes” a healthy body, causes weight loss or treats every pain condition are not supported.

LOCATION AND BEHAVIOUR

Common patterns to compare

The same symptom label can describe different patterns. These clues help you choose a sensible next step; they do not confirm a diagnosis.

Clinical lymphedema care

Specialist treatment may combine compression, skin care, exercise and manual techniques after medical assessment.

Wellness massage

Some people find gentle touch relaxing, but relaxation is different from treating disease or proving increased lymph flow.

PainFreeU self-help

PainFreeU uses a before/after movement or symptom rating to reduce guesswork. This is a self-observation method, not established lymphedema treatment.

A PRACTICAL PLAN

What to do today

  1. If you have diagnosed swelling or lymphedema, follow the plan from a qualified healthcare professional.
  2. For general self-help, use light comfortable contact and one repeatable movement or 0–10 rating before and after.
  3. Stop if swelling, pain, skin colour, breathing or general health worsens. Do not substitute self-treatment for an unexplained symptom assessment.
Use one consistent measure

Choose one movement that safely reveals the signal. Rate it from 0–10, change one thing, then repeat the same movement. Also note the response later that day and the next morning.

PAINFREEU'S ROLE

Measure first. Change one thing. Measure again.

Rune Åbø’s PainFreeU method is informed by extensive hands-on clinical experience and focuses on measuring response. The proposed “passage” explanations are a working self-help model; they should not be presented as proven anatomy, a diagnosis or a promise that lymphatic flow caused the pain.

WHEN SELF-HELP IS NOT ENOUGH

Warning signs

Do not start massage over an acute infection, a suspected blood clot, unexplained sudden swelling, or unstable heart or kidney disease without medical advice. New one-sided limb swelling, redness, heat, chest pain or breathlessness requires prompt assessment.

If you are uncertain, choose assessment over another online test. In an emergency, contact your local emergency service.

QUICK ANSWERS

Frequently asked questions

Is lymphatic drainage a detox?

No. The liver, kidneys, lungs and other systems handle waste. Evidence does not support broad detox claims from massage.

Can it help lymphedema?

Specialised manual lymphatic drainage can be one part of a clinician-directed lymphedema plan, often alongside compression, exercise and skin care.

Is PainFreeU medical treatment?

PFU Pocket provides general measured self-help and education. It does not diagnose, replace healthcare or promise a clinical outcome.
